Maternity Leave

The labour laws of Ghana provide for 12 weeks of maternity leave, in addition to a person's annual leave. There is no provision for when maternity leave starts and ends. In practice, most women wait for as long as possible in order that they have the bulk of the leave outstanding when they have the child. For example, many women wait until the second week or the week before birth before they go on maternity leave. This will leave about 10 or 11 weeks of maternity leave, plus the 4 weeks of annual leave, which is good for the sake of breastfeeding. In addition to the paid maternity and annual leave, discussed already, there is a further 2 weeks of maternity leave, if a woman has a multiple birth.

    Good to see your much awaited second post! But something was left out...Is there such a thing as paternity/parental leave in Ghana?

    Dear kajsa, as yet, there is no parental or paternity leave in Ghana; it is only maternity!

    wow, that's pretty good! It is amazing actually. You will never get this in the US of A unless you have a lot of PTO(Paid time off)accumulated!

    Nice post. That's great news for women in Ghana but for men, i think there is no paternity leave for them.

    Anon, I believe you mean CS. It would probably be that you will be given extra time off by your employers just like a person who is on "sick leave" and has had surgery.

    12 weeks means 84 what about those who goes to leave for 21 days that's 63 days

    want to know if one is still entitle to the leave if her child dies. i work in valley view university n lost my child on birth. i applied for maternity leave and the HR has rejected it saying i dont qualify because my child is dead.

    has the regular 12 weeks maternity been reviewed in Ghana? can one ask for extended leave of two weeks and follow it with annual leave?
